Serial Mash
Lead Product Designer • Design System Architect
Serial Mash is an online platform designed to engage primary school students with interactive books, quizzes, and activities that enhance literacy, while also supporting teachers in setting tasks and assessing progress.
The challenge was to create an intuitive experience that would engage children and support both classroom and home learning. The goal was to design a product that not only improved user engagement and learning outcomes but also served as a catalyst for developing a broader design system for the company, streamlining design processes and ensuring consistency across future products.
Case study: Product Redesign & Design System
Serial Mash, originally part of Purple Mash, needed to be redesigned as a standalone product to offer a distinct yet familiar user experience. This transition served as an opportunity to revamp the company’s design system, aiming for greater consistency, scalability, and improved user experience across products.
Design System Development
Identified shared functions across products and created a unified site structure for consistency.
Developed a diverse colour palette fitting to the wide range of usage needed for the number of legacy products, that reduced over 3500 shades of hard-coded colours, standardising them across products.
Created a design system library in Figma, including typography, grids, spacing, and child-friendly iconography, and introduced Figma as the company’s design tool.
Testing & Implementation
Conducted remote user testing using Maze to validate design components and made adjustments based on feedback.
Launched in 2022, Serial Mash became a successful standalone product, offering a fresh, user-friendly interface while maintaining familiarity with Purple Mash.
